Alvarion Ltd (Nasdaq:ALVR), a provider of WiMAX and wireless broadband solutions, announced on Tuesday (23 December) that Linkem Spa, a wireless broadband service provider and WiMAX license holder in Italy, plans to deploy WiMAX across Italy using Alvarion's 4Motion solution for the 3.5GHz frequency band.

According to the company, the first phase of the project, which commenced in October 2008, provides voice and data services to SOHO, businesses and vertical markets. Alvarion's offering includes BreezeMAX base stations, customer premises equipment and WiMAX embedded PC cards.

Linkem holds WiMAX licenses in thirteen regions across Italy, which covers over 80% of the population. The company plans to deploy Mobile WiMAX networks in both rural and urban settings and connect all thirteen regions to high-speed broadband access and services by 2013.

4Motion is the foundation of Alvarion's OPEN WiMAX ecosystem, which combines its BreezeMAX RAN (radio access network) with other systems for an enhanced product offering.
